How common is genital herpes? Genital herpes is extremely common in the United States. Current statistics indicate that 1 in 4 women and approximately 20% of all men suffer from this form of herpes. These percentages equate to some 45 million Americans, age 12 and older, that have had genital HSV infection. Who is most at risk for developing herpes? When asking this question, keep in mind that herpes incidence varies widely and is dependant upon a number of factors; including age and degree of sexual activity. That being said, current estimates suggest that approximately 22% of Americans are infected with HSV-2, or genital herpes; and over the past few years, white adolescents (Caucasians) account for the majority of diagnosed cases. Approximately 5% of sexually active adults will develop herpes in a given year. In addition, women are at an elevated risk when compared to men. In fact, they are four times as likely contract the virus during unprotected sex as men. However, despite these statistics, specialists reiterate that if you are a sexually active individual, you are automatically included in the ‘at risk’ populous. Is it possible to spread genital herpes not during an outbreak? Yes. Many people who contract genital herpes are asymptomatic, or do not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. Upwards of 90% of infected individuals spread the virus unknowingly, due to the absence of herpes-related symptoms. HSV can remain active upon the skin without the presence of symptoms.
